News just broke that a guy here in the Austin area was crushed to death by his car when it slipped off the floor jack.

Jack stands. A spare tire too. Take every possible precaution to ensure this doesn't happen to you. There are no guarantees in life, but that doesn't mean you have to tempt fate by trying to save a few bucks or minutes.

yup, wheels too. I mean if you have them off anyway might as well jam them under the car

Or just work on rusty VWs. Mine fell on my head and all I got was a headache and a bill for 300$. Crappy thing only cost 1200 to buy. Left a killer dent on the side though. ANd to its credit, I was able to drive myself to the hospital after it tried to kill me.

Jackstands on a sturdy surface with the wheels under the car. One of the alumni from my college car club passed away from a car falling over too.

The joke used to be "Germany or Florida", but ever more often, Texas is becoming a rival for stupidity and general weirdness.
EDIT:
Case in point, just saw this article...
for fucks sake, people!

Any place that's a big melting pot that's growing this fast is going to get some dull blades.

Chock the tires as well.

Even if you have the front up and the parking brake on. Why take chances???

Yup, you can put a lot of load into a car while working on it. Best it doesn't move.

May I present some of the best-made jack stands on the market:
US Jack garage stands, 3/6/10 ton versions
The 3 and 6 ton versions are only a C-note for a pair, and they're weight rated PER STAND, not per pair. So a single 3 ton stand is rated to support 3 whole tons by itself. Check the height range for your particular needs. One of the best safety investments a shade-tree mechanic can make. (note: I am not affiliated with US Jack, just a fan of their products)

Not sure how many times a brick holding the back wheels saved my life.

wtf indeed, but that vehicle has a huge amount of ground clearance to begin with.

One of the most important things people often forget is to use the e-brake when jacking.

I need to take a picture of the local tire place. I drive by regularly and they'll have a car up in the air, no wheels, four jackstands. I can't believe they haven't been cited for any kind of safety violations.

I'm gonna assume he's just changing a tire/wheel for my own peace of mind.

Always, ever since I was changing the rotors and pads on a family member's car- level garage surface, correct jack location, handbrake up, and it still slipped. I started to hear creaking/saw it happening so I grabbed the (removed) front wheel and practically tossed it under the wheel well with my best ninja reflexes before it all came down, resulting in almost no damage, but I was pretty embarrassed for myself. Does anyone know what kind of damage happens to a midsize car that falls down from an average jacked up height without one front wheel? Just rotors, or possible messed up tie rods, axles, or more?

Probably doing this to change a tire, in which case I'm not sure why he doesn't jack it up by the rear suspension instead of the body.
